Please Note: Flash player plugin is required to view this demo.
This Tutorial Is For Current UNC Affiliates
An FTP client is required to FTP files to your campus space. If you would like to set up an FTP client on your computer, please see these instructions. This demo features the WS_FTP software.

Step by Step Instructions

The below instructions explain how to use FTP to move data to the campus network. Instructions are geared towards patrons who need to move data created using the GeoLytics CensusCD products in Davis Library Reference.

  1. Open the FTP software. On the E-Docs machines in Davis Reference the icon is available in the desktop folder called "Internet Applications". Double-click on the WS_FTP icon.
  2. At the connection prompt, make sure that the Profile Name is "isis" or "isis.unc.edu", the HostName/Address is "isis.unc.edu", and the Host Type is UNIX (standard). User ID is your onyen, Password is your Password. Click OK (do not check the box beside Anonymous or Save Pwd). If prompted a second time for an onyen and/or password, retype your onyen and/or password.
  3. The left side of the screen displays the folders and files on the machine you are using. Navigate to and select the file(s) to be transferred (hold the Ctrl key to select multiple files). Keep in mind that ArcView shapefiles consist of multiple files. Make sure to select all of the necessary files (.shp, .shx, and .dbf) or the shapefile will be incomplete. Select the document file (.doc) as well. The .doc file is the data dictionary- it provides names for the column headings for data created by the CensusCD products.
  4. The right side of the screen should display the folders and files located on your personal AFS space. Navigate to the location on your personal AFS space where you would like to move the files.
  5. Select binary transfer format.
  6. Click the -> icon in the middle of the screen. The files will be moved
  7. After the files have transferred, you may want to compare the file sizes to verify that the transfer was successful. If you encounter a problem, you have most likely exceeded your space limit on the campus network.
