GIS Mission and Policies
Our Mission
We provide access to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and
spatial data. We assist patrons in locating, acquiring, formatting and
projecting spatial data. We also provide classroom training and access
to online training.
Policies
-
Individualized assistance is available for the following tasks:
- Locating print or electronic GIS resources
- Locating and acquiring spatial data
- Formatting spatial data
- Projecting spatial data
Assistance is available in person and over email or telephone.
Contact Amanda Henley, GIS Librarian, to set up an appointment at ahenley@email.unc.edu
or (919) 962-1151.
- Lengthy questions regarding GIS methods (How do I...) and
general GIS software questions are beyond the scope of the Library's GIS
services.
- The public GIS computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- During busy times, priority may be given to academic work or to
UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty, or staff.
- When requested, we will create a folder on the hard disk of one of our
public GIS computers for patrons to store GIS- related data.
- All files on the public GIS machines that are not located in a GIS
patron's folder are subject to deletion.
- Software and spatial data may be licensed and subject to restrictions
on who can use it and how it can be used. We provide GIS users with public
domain data and any other data and software that we can under the terms
of the licenses.
- Due to license restrictions, ESRI GIS software (available via the UNC
Chapel Hill University site license) is for non-commercial uses only.
- We ask that our patrons honor our license agreements with software
and data vendors.
- The plotter is for printing census maps and maps created using GIS
only. There is a charge for using the plotter. See our plotter policy page for
more information about the plotter.
