Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Services
How can we help you?
Davis Library Research and Instructional Services strives to facilitate the use of GIS by
our patrons. We provide access to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
software and spatial data. Our GIS Librarian helps patrons locate, acquire,
format and project spatial data. Classroom training and access to online
training are also provided. We continually expand our collection of spatial data from
local, state, and federal
government sources as well as commercial sources. Our spatial data holdings can be browsed
or searched using the GIS Data Finder.
Policies
- Individualized assistance is available for the following tasks:
locating print or electronic GIS resources, locating and acquiring spatial data,
formatting spatial data, and projecting spatial data. Assistance is available in
person and over email or telephone.
-
Contact Amanda Henley, GIS Librarian, for an appointment:
amanda.henley@unc.edu
or (919) 962-1151.
-
Lengthy questions regarding GIS methods (How do I...) and general GIS
software questions are beyond the scope of the Library's GIS services.
-
Our public GIS computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
During busy times, priority is given to academic work or to UNC-Chapel
Hill students, faculty, or staff.
-
When requested, we will create a folder on the hard disk of one of our public
GIS computers for patrons to store GIS- related data. This data is not backed up.
-
All files on the public GIS machines that are not located in a GIS patron's
folder are subject to deletion.
-
Software and spatial data may be licensed and subject to restrictions on who
can use it and how it can be used. We provide GIS users with public domain data
and any other data and software that we can under the terms of the licenses.
-
Due to license restrictions, ESRI GIS software (available via North Carolina site license) is for non-commercial uses only.
-
We ask that our patrons honor our license agreements with software and data
vendors.
-
The GIS printers are for printing census maps and maps created using GIS only.
There is a charge for using the plotter (see below).
Plotter Policy
-
Use of the plotter is restricted to printing census maps and maps created using
GIS software.

Please make an appointment to use the plotter. Appointments are available Monday
through Friday, 8am to 4pm. Email Amanda Henley for an appointment.
