This short course will provide an overview of map projections and how to work with them in ArcMap and ArcCatalog. Datum transformations will also be discussed. Students will gain a basic understanding of coordinate systems, and will learn how to:
Assign a coordinate system to a data layer
Project data
Use ArcMap to decipher the coordinate system of data that has no metadata
There will be a presentation followed by hands-on exercises.

Working with LIDAR Data

Instructor: Sarah B. Wray

Amanda is the GIS Librarian at Davis Library.
Date/Time: Wednesday, October 25: 2:00 - 3:00
Location: Manning Hall Room 01
Course Description:
Amanda will show participants how to best utilize the geospatial data collection available from the Library, and demonstrate the how to obtain spatial data from online sources.

Google Earth for Scientific Regional Analysis

Course Website

Instructors: Scott Madry and Amanda Henley
Scott is a Research Associate Professor of Anthropology at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
(NEW) Date/Time: Friday, November 17, from 2:00-4:00
Location: Manning Hall Room 01
Course Description:
An area of the Burgundy region of France was surveyed using Google Earth and a surprisingly large number of previously recorded and new archaeological sites were located. This short course describes the capabilities and limitations of Google Earth for regional archaeological survey and site location, and for general feature identification. The system has significant benefits for this work, but also has limitations that could be addressed to make the tool even more useful.
Following a short presentation of the research results, there will be hands-on exercises using Google Earth and ArcGIS software. Participants will analyze an area and create 'placemarks' to share with others and see how to incorporate GPS data. Did you know that you can overlay images in Google Earth? Did you know that you can export shapefiles so that they can be viewed in Google Earth? These exercises will show you how.
