Introduction

Research in the social sciences, particularly law and political science, can be complicated because citations to government publications in bibliographies and footnotes frequently include combinations of letters and numbers that may not be immediately recognizable. The letters may be an acronym for the title of a work (UNTS is the United Nations Treaty Series), an abbreviation (S.Rpt is a Senate Report), a United Nations document number (S/RES/1518; Security Council Resolution 1518) or the name of an editor of a commercially published compilation (Bevans: Charles I. Bevans, the editor of a compilation of U.S. treaties).

Purpose

This list should help users decipher citations to government publications and find them in Davis Library. The list is arranged alphabetically by acronym, abbreviation, editor's name or United Nations document symbol number. Entries include the title of the work and call numbers or other shelving information. If an online version is available, the URL is included.

Scope

Citations are to documents published by the U.S. federal government, British government publications, and international intergovernmental organizations as well as commonly used commercial publications that index, republish, or compile government documents.

1. Federal documents include: legislative publications (hearings, House/Senate reports, bills, public laws), administrative publications (regulations, federal agency decisions), treaties, and judicial publications(U.S. Supreme Court decisions).
2. British government publications include Command papers and parliamentary debates.
3. International organization documents include regulations, court decisions, treaties, resolutions, and official records.
4. Commercial publications include cumulative indexes, compilations and republications of documents.
   

    This Does Not Include:

1. Citations to court cases (other than the U.S. Supreme Court).
   
2. Citations to general class numbers in the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification system used by the U.S. Government Printing Office.
3. Citations to documents relating to U.S. states: court cases, statutory compilations, session laws, administrative compilations, or administrative registers.
4. Citations to academic or commercially published journals, including law review journals, or commercially published law reporters such as those from the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA), Commerce Clearinghouse (CCH), Prentice-Hall (P-H), West Publishing, or other publishers.
