Major Databases of Government Information

This is a selection of major internet databases from commercial vendors, the federal government and the United Nations. Due to variations in UNC-Chapel Hill campus subscriptions and vendor license agreements, access to some of these databases is restricted:

CenStats - Census Bureau Databases and publications, including "County Business Patterns," "USA Counties," "Annual Survey of Manufacturers," "ZIP Business Patterns," "Census Tract/Street Index" "Building Permits," "International Trade Data," "Occupation by Sex, Race & Hispanic Origin," and the "Consolidated Federal Funds Report." All Users.

Congressional Universe - from the Congressional Information Service. U.S. legislative information, including the activities of members of Congress, bills, public laws, and the "Federal Register" and the "Code of Federal Regulations." UNC Campus Database (the Law School has a separate subscription). Students, faculty, and staff with a valid UNC-Chapel Hill 9-digit PID (Person ID) may  access from off-campus (instructions).

Edgar Database - financial information on U.S. public companies who file reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission. All Users.

Environmental Health Information Service - published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences - provides access to databases and journals. All Users.

Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) - from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Current daily, weekly, monthly U.S. and regional economic data. All Users.

GPO ACCESS, from the Government Printing Office.
This is a collection of 30 full-text databases, including the Code of Federal Regulations, the Congressional Record, the Federal Register, the United States Code" the Budget of the U.S. Government, etc.

Historic Files of Supreme Court Decisions - from FedWorld. Texts of 7,000 decisions issued between 1937-1975. All Users.

InfoNation - from the United Nations; statistics on UN member countries: geography, economy, population, and social indicators. All Users.

Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (MBS) Online - international statistics from the United Nations. Password Access. Ask at the Davis Library Reference Desk.

Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications - consists of bibliographic records published in the Monthly Catalog (MOCAT) since January 1994, for Depository Library items. A link identifies the libraries that receive each item. All Users.

National Climatic Data Center Online Document Library - includes: Monthly Climatic Data of the World (MCDW); Storm Data (SD); Local Climatological Data (LCD); Climatological Data; Hourly Precipitation Data.  Free searching is available from all .edu domains.

National Technical Information Service - the official source for government-sponsored U.S. and worldwide scientific, technical, engineering, and business-related information. All Users.

PubMed - is the National Library of Medicine's search service, accessing the 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE (with links to participating on-line journals), and other related databases. All Users.

STAT-USA/Internet - from the Department of Commerce, includes current and historical U.S. economic and financial releases and economic data. Also includes current and historical international trade-related releases, international market research, trade opportunities, country analysis, and the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB). UNC Campus Database (Not available at UNC Hospitals).

Statistical Universe - from the Congressional Information Service. An index to over 100,000 U.S. Government statistical publications, from 1973-present. UNC Campus Database. Students, faculty, and staff with a valid UNC-Chapel Hill 9-digit PID (Person ID) may  access from off-campus (instructions).

UN-I-QUE United Nations Info Quest. Quick access to UN document symbols/sales numbers, 1946 to the present. Focuses upon documents and publications of a recurrent nature: annual/sessional reports of committees/commissions; monographic series; journals; annual publications; reports periodically/irregularly issued; reports of major conferences; statements in the General Assembly General Debate; etc. All Users.

World News Connection - from the National Technical Information Service. English translations of foreign media, including full text and summaries of newspaper articles, conference proceedings, television and radio broadcasts, periodicals, and non-classified technical reports. Password Access. Ask at the Davis Library Reference Desk.

Zip Codes - from the U.S. Post Office. All Users.
