IV. Secondary Resources

IV. A. Serial Bibliographies for Literature & History
Undoubtedly, MLA & ABELL are the premier serial (ongoing) bibliographies for the study of British literature, as is Historical Abstracts for the study of British history from the Renaissance forward. That said, there are other specialized serial bibliographies that are useful for the study of 19th century British literature, and they follow MLA, ABELL, & HA in this section. See also the "Surveys of Research" section below for Bibliographic Essays that may be issued serially.

All subject areas will have their specialized indexes/serial bibliographies. If you are uncertain which index or database may be the most appropriate for a specific subject, try the Research by Subject link from the Article Databases icon on the Library's Homepage For tips on searching ABELL & MLA (below), see the MLA - ABELL Search Guide.

MLA International Bibliography
MLA indexes books, book chapters, articles, & dissertations done in literature depts. Does not index books reviews. MLA attempts coverage of all modern literatures worldwide, but does not cover classical Greek & Latin literatures (which are indexed by L'Annee Philologique. In April 2006, MLA added electronic records for the interim 1926-1962, thereby extending electronic availability back to 1926 (and earlier for some JSTOR records.) MLA also now provides linking to articles from Project Muse journals.
Article Databases & More, 1926-present (plus earlier full-text linking to JSTOR articles).

ABELL (Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature).
ABELL provides indexing for English-language literatures and links to some full text via Literature Online (LION) -- see Primary Sources below. Indexes books, book chapters, articles, dissertations, & book reviews of scholarly books. Available electronically 1920 to present.

IV. B. Surveys of Research (Bibliographic Essays)
Bibliographic essays are narrative in form and typically survey the state of research for a particular subject area, literary figure, etc. They are by nature highly selective and evaluative. They may be retrospective, surveying the state of research up until shortly before the date of publication of a monograph, or they may be issued serially and typically survey "The Year's Work" in a particular area. Bibliographic essays are particularly useful for alerting scholars to the most significant work in a particular area.

It will grow to encompass 3,500 journals and fifteen million individual articles.
A major retrospective project. Because there is no subject indexing (keyword title only), it is problematic for subject searching. Excellent for known authors or titles. Also indexes a number of magazines & journals included in the Wellesley Index, below.

VI. Verification Tools

VI. A. Records of Publication

The English Catalogue of Books [serial]. London : Published for the Publisher's Circular by Sampson Low, Marston & Co.
"Books issued in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland." "Supplemented by the annual: English catalogue of books, and by: Publishers' circular and booksellers' record." A useful but not altogether reliable record of British publishing.
The most complete record for Britsh book publishing for the 19th century is The Nineteenth Century Short Title Catalogue (NSTC) Project, established in 1983. This is an ongoing project. Duke's Perkins/Bostock Library Reference Dept. has the NSTC on CD-ROM. Other principal verification tools for 19th century British publishing inlcude the Union Catalogs & Major Library Catalogs listed below.
Davis Reference Z2001 .E52 1801-1965

The Waterloo Directory of English Newspapers and Periodicals, 1800-1900.
Not an index, but rather a directory, the Waterloo Directory of English Newspapers and Periodicals, 1800-1900, aims to be the comprehensive listing of every such publication produced regularly, from daily to annually, in England during the 19th century. An enormously ambitious project, it now lists 50,000 titles, including 9,000 facsimile title pages, and 48,000 personal names.

VI. B. 2. Print Union Catalogs
CAVEAT: No once source is ever comprehensive. These older print union catalogs still contain records that have yet to make it into electronic catalogs. Hence, these catalogs below are still used & are still useful.

The National Union Catalog, Pre-1956 Imprints; a Cumulative Author List Representing Library of Congress Printed cards and Titles Reported by Other American Libraries. Compiled and edited with the cooperation of the Library of Congress and the National Union Catalog Subcommittee of the Resources Committee of the Resources and Technical Services Division, American Library Association. 754 vols. London: Mansell, 1968-1981.
One of the great bibliographic projects in the pre-digital era. The NUC is a main entry union catalog of North American library holdings for books printed prior to 1956. Although much of this material is now in WorldCat, the NUC is still heavily used for bibliographic verification. Referred to as "the NUC," "the NUC Pre-56," and sometimes as "Mansell" (the publisher).
Davis Reference Z881.A1 U518

Newspapers in Microform. 3 vols. Washington: The Library.
A union catalog of North American library holdings for domestic and foreign newpapers on microfilm. (The dates 1948-1983 on the volumes refer to the dates of the project, not the dates of the newspapers.) Papers for all periods are included. Referred to as "NIM."
Davis Reference Desk Z6945 .N75

Union List of Serials. 4 vols. Prepared under the sponsorship of the Joint Committee on the Union List of Serials. Washington: Library of Congress, [1953].
Again, "no one source is comprehensive," so the Union List of Serials is often still useful. Caveat: older serial titles may be cataloged under Corporate Author (e.g., The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) rather than under title. Referred to as "ULS." Cutoff date for serials is 1950. Newer titles are in New Serial Titles ("NST").
Davis Reference Books In Print Stand Z6945 .N44

Union list of Victorian Serials: A Union List of Selected Nineteenth-Century British Serials Available in United States and Canadian Libraries. Richard D. Fulton and C.M. Colee, general editors ; editorial board, Christopher C. Dahl ... [et al.]. New York : Garland Pub., 1985.
Holdings should be supplemented with holdings from WorldCat.
