Resources for the Study of Film
NOTE: The Online Catalog and Electronic Indexes and Databases all are available from the Library's Online Services Home Page. Or connect to Libraries from the UNC Home Page. The Online Catalog is freely available both on and off- campus. Most of the other electronic databases are available campus-wide and from off-campus to UNC Chapel students, faculty, and staff by logging in through a Proxy Server.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
LIBRARY WEB
TUTORIALS
To get started, check out the Library's online Web Tutorials.
These include a general Introduction to Library
Research, specialized ones for Humanities Research,
and Art, and several others
focused on evaluating and documenting information.
Catalogs for hundreds of libraries worldwide can now be accessed online. Two of the most important catalogs for locating materials on the UNC campus and in other libraries are:
UNC Chapel Hill Online Catalog:
The chief tool for locating materials of all kinds in the many libraries of UNC Chapel Hill. Lists books, magazines, newspapers, scholarly publications, UNC dissertations and theses, films, musical recordings, scores, books on tape, manuscripts and archival materials, posters, maps, and materials in electronic formats. Can be searched using authors' names, titles, subject headings, keywords, and call numbers.
The Online Catalog will give you the Library of Congress Call Number you need to locate an item in the library. What a library classification does is to arrange materials by subject.
You read a call number from left to right, and top to bottom.
You also can use the Library of Congress Classification Outline to determine general call number ranges for various subjects. The "GN" classification in this scheme, for example, is where you will find materials on Anthropology.
Searching by Subject in the Online Catalog
To do a Subject Search, you use established subject
headings, or descriptors. For additional ideas on subject
headings check out the Library of Congress Guide to
Subject Headings (Desk Z695.L695 1998). Although
headings will use capital and lower case letters and dashes
and commas you do not need to use either. A few examples
are:
motion pictures
motion pictures history
--law and legislation
--moral and ethical aspects
--plots, themes, etc.
--social aspects
motion pictures french
german etc.
motion pictures and children
and history
and literature

Mass media and the family
Using Key Word Searching you can search for terms in authors, titles, or subjects in any order:
(films or motion pictures) and china
children and movies
films and war not videorecording
You can look for a particular book by its author:
kael pauline
american film institute
You can look for a particular book, journal, or film by its title:
changing image of blacks in American film
histoire dadele h
literature film quarterly
NOTE: When searching for serial (journals, magazines, newspapers) titles it is helpful to limit your search to Journal/Magazine (In the New Online Catalog) or to Serials (In the Old Catalog).
Going beyond the UNC-CH Online Catalog:
WorldCat.
A giant national online library catalog of over approximatelt 60 million
records based on the holdings of thousands of U.S. and some
international libraries. Invaluable for searching for
materials by subject, determining bibliographical
information, and locating copies. Represents books and
other printed materials from the beginning of
printing.
Can be searched using same headings used in the UNC Online
Catalog, as well as by author, keywords, etc.
Searching in the Online Catalog, you can also link to the catalogs of the local Triangle institutions and UNC Greensboro. Or, from the Library's Online Services Home Page, click on Other Library Catalogs for quick connections to the catalogs of Duke, North Carolina State, Other UNC System Online Catalogs, and Additional Online Catalogs Worldwide.
