Newspapers in the UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries and Sources for Newspaper Research
This guide introduces a selection of the most established and useful print and electronic reference resources for research involving both current and historical newspapers, and it provides information on newspapers held in the libraries of UNC Chapel Hill. For additional assistance contact the Davis Library Reference Department. See Ask a Librarian for contact information. A Table Of Contents is provided below.
All Call numbers and Special locations for print resources are in Davis Library, Reference Department unless otherwise noted. Online resources available through the Library's Home Page from the list of Article Databases & More are so noted and are available campus-wide and off-campus to UNC Chapel Hill students, faculty, and staff.
Newspapers are one of the most widely produced, distributed, and valuable sources for both current and historical information. Since their beginnings in the seventeenth century, newspapers have provided a record of events, people, opinion, and cultural pursuits related to the world, nations, regions, cities, and places down to the smallest hamlets, and have had a profound influence on the course of history. Sadly, due to factors such as the rapid deterioration of newsprint, the conversion of newspaper backfiles to the rather unpopular microfilm format for preservation purposes, and, until recently, the virtual lack of subject indexing, newspapers have presented problems for the researcher. In addition, even the most well-funded library cannot afford to provide more than a tiny percentage of the newspapers available.
With the advent, in the 1970s, of electronic indexes for a number of major papers, and, in the last ten years, the explosion of full-text newspapers online, the situation has improved tremendously. Researchers now may have access to hundreds of news sources worldwide, and the tools to search the contents for material on particular topics.
I. Newspapers in the UNC Libraries
The central collection of newspapers in the UNC-Chapel Hill libraries other than those from North Carolina is in Davis Library. Current issues are found in the Current Periodicals and Newspapers Reading Room on the first floor. A list of Currently Received Newspapers by state, country, and language is provided by the Davis Library Serials Information Services.
Newspaper backfiles for the most part are in the Microforms Collection in Davis Library. Although many newspapers are listed in the Library's Online Catalog, many others are not. You may need to use another list or catalog to find more complete information. Newspapers are listed chronologically in the decade file noted below.
An alphabetical list of newspapers in the Davis Microforms Collection is available on the Web from the collection's Home Page. Separate lists of Russian newspapers and of East Asian serials also are provided.
The main collection of North Carolina newspapers is in the North Carolina Collection in Wilson Library. Davis Library does maintain current subscriptions to several of the major North Carolina newspapers and has a microfilm backfile of the Raleigh News and Observer from 1980.
The Park Library in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Carroll Hall has an extensive collection of current North Carolina newspapers and lists these on the Web with information on the availability of local backfiles.
The following guide can be very helpful in finding papers from a particular place and date:

Be aware, too, that hundreds of newspapers are available full-text in electronic resources that will be covered in this Research Guide, and that these will not be listed in the Online Catalog.
Always ask a librarian if you are unable to locate a particular newspaper or have other questions about the Library's newspaper holdings.
II. Newspapers in Other Libraries
There are many catalogs of newspapers in individual libraries and only a few of the major ones are noted here. Union lists are library catalogs recording the holdings of more than one library. Both types of catalog often will tell you not only that a newspaper may be found in a particular library, but also the specific dates, issues, etc. which are available.

If you are looking for information on a specific event and you know the date, finding the accounts in newspapers can be relatively easy. If you are researching a topic that is more general, the process can be daunting. The researcher's only alternative may be to go through a paper page by page, issue by issue, week by week.
A newspaper index can greatly simplify the process by providing subject access cumulated over a broad span of time. Traditional print newspaper indexes, for example, usually are published monthly with annual cumulations. For the most part, print indexes are for individual newspapers, and, because of the steep expense involved in their production before the days of computers, historically there were few of them. The only longstanding, ongoing indexes covering the entire runs of their papers are those for The New York Times and The Times of London. In the last twenty years the situation has improved enormously with the advent of electronic indexing and the additional availability of hundreds of full-text newspapers online. In addition to more recent publications, a large number of historical full-text newspapers and historical indexes are appearing electronically.
So keep in mind that the print indexes in the next section may have been superceded by electronic indexing and by full-text availability of the newspaper.
The New York Times and The Times of London are two of the world's premier longstanding newspapers. Because there are indexes to the entire runs of both, these two papers are particularly valuable to researchers.
Also, the Davis Library Microforms Collection has full runs of both papers. The New York Times is Microfilm Serial 1-517 and the Times is Microfilm Serial 1-537.

While other print indexes are few in number, they are important for providing retrospective access to a number of important papers. The library also has microfilm holdings of the papers indexed and this information is noted.
If there is not a current subscription to an index it is because indexing is available online through Newspaper Abstracts or full text is found in Lexis Nexis Academic or one of the other full-text online services. A link for full-text information for each paper indexed also is provided.

An index to a number of major German newspapers. Many
German newspapers are available indexed and in full-text in LexisNexis Academic
Newspaper Abstracts (NewsAbs)Via OCLC FirstSearch.
1989- . (Article Databases & More)
Newspaper Abstracts describes significant items in more
than 50 national and regional newspapers, including the
New York Times, USA Today, the Boston
Globe , the San Francisco Chronicle, the Wall
Street Journal, and many Black Newspapers.
The UNC-Chapel Hill libraries will not have all of the papers indexed by these sources but many will be available full-text in LexisNexis Academic (described below) or Factiva also described below.
Given the availability of full-text newspapers in databases, why would you want to use an electronic index without full text? First because indexes cover some papers for longer time periods than the run of the online version. In addition, an index might help you to narrow down a broad or ill-defined topic and to see what subject terms could be used for searching full text more effectively.

IV. A. Current Full-Text Newspapers
Many newspapers now have Web sites that anyone can connect to and view selections from current and past issues online. In most cases, however, to view the full content of today's issue and to access the full archive of past issues one must pay to subscribe to the electronic newspaper.
The UNC Library provides access to hundreds of full-text newspapers, usually not as individual subscriptions, but in the form of databases comprising multiple titles. Chronologically, most full-text papers date from roughly the last 20 years and the dates of online coverage vary widely from title to title. Access also is becoming available to a growing number of historical newspapers, and these are covered in the next section of this guide.
