A valuable guide to standard reference works in every subject field. Especially useful if you need assistance in beginning research in a field not central to your academic discipline. Arranged by broad subjects (humanities, social sciences, history, pure, and applied sciences) with subdivisions by specific discipline. With an author, title, subject index.

Lists bibliographic sources which appear regularly (like the MLA Bibliography), grouped in five major areas: comprehensive bibliographies and general indexes; English, American, and Commonwealth literatures; non-English literatures; subjects (e.g., critical and literary theory, film); authors (i.e., bibliographies of critical works about specific authors). Especially useful for identifying serial bibliographies appearing in scholarly journals.

II. Literary Dictionaries & Encyclopedias

Dictionary of Literary Biography. Detroit: Gale Research, 1978-.
An ongoing series of more than 300 vols. that provides biographical essays for authors. Essays also include primary and secondary bibliographies and typically indicate locations for deceased authors' papers. Generally arranged by nationality and genre and period, e.g., American Poets Since World War II,Sixth Series (v. 193). Although this series began for American and then for English authors, it has now expanded to include an increasing number of European and international writers. Each volume has a cumulative author index, so the highest volume number in the series (most recent) has the most complete index. The full text of the DLB (with very few illustrations) is now available via Literature Resource Center. In LRC, it is possible to search for authors individually, or for "Authors by Type" (e.g., by nationality, ethnic group, literary movement, etc.).

Contemporary Literary Criticism. [serial] v. 1-, 1973- . Detroit: Gale Research Co.
An ongoing series that publishes excerpts of criticism for authors living after 1959. Each author section includes a biographical sketch; criticism is arranged chronologically. Useful for tracing critical reception. Individual authors may appear in multiple volumes. The volumes in any of these Gale series carry a cumulative index, so the latest volume will index the entire series (as well as the other similar series by Gale).

IV. Retrospective Bibliographies

Baldensperger, Fernand. Bibliography of Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1950.
A work which attempts to cover the literature on literary influences from the earliest times to the 20th century. Arranged in four books: the first and third cover general works, themes, genres, movements, and international literary relations; the second and fourth deal with specific national literatures and time periods. Updated (but not superseded) by the Yearbook of Comparative Literature (see "Journals" below). Still useful for identifying earlier criticism.

Allows searching by cited reference (who has cited whom); also provides a complete bibliography for the source author. A useful way of identifying related material when conventional subject searching is difficult or non-productive. Also helpful for locating reviews of scholarly books.

Since it covers all subjects, use broad subject headings such as " French Literature" or "German Fiction", as well as specific authors' names when searching. Available electronically as Bibliographic Index Plus.

Often referred to as the "MLA", although the Modern Language Association is responsible for many other publications as well. It is a bibliography of scholarly works on the languages and literatures of the world (excluding Latin & Greek literature, which are covered by L'Annee Philologigue). Before 1956 coverage was of American periodicals only. Now provides access to the contents of over 3,000 periodicals, hundreds of collected works, and American dissertations. Since 1981 subject indexes provide access to themes, theories, motifs, methodological approaches, movements, etc.

Nineteenth Century Masterfile
The 19th Century Masterfile compiles an assortment of indexes to 19th century printed material (actually from about 1774 to 1920). The indexes cover periodical literature (e.g., Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1906), selected newspapers, books, U. S. government documents, U. S. patents, and British Parliamentary Debates.

Lexis/Nexis Academic.
An electronic database of primarily full-text articles from newspapers (domestic & international), magazines & newswire sources. For the most part it does not include scholarly journals, but does provide full-text coverage for the New York Times (ca. 1980-present), London Times, etc. Good for finding author interviews and book reviews, especially for younger authors not yet in the critical canon.

Covers popular and scholarly journal articles with many full-text articles. Academic Search Premier provides information from a wide range of academic areas including business, social sciences, humanities, general academic, general science, education and multi-cultural topics. T his multidiscplinary database features full-text for over 4,000 journals with many dating back to 1975, abstracts and indexing for over 8,200 scholarly journals.

Expanded Academic ASAP (via INFO Trac).
Indexes approximately 1,500 popular magazines & scholarly journals, 1980-present. Provides, for more recent years (1990s), some full-text articles, including book reviews.

Periodicals Index Online(Formerly PCI: Periodicals Contents Index) . Chadwyck-Healey.
A retrospective keyword title, author index of American, British & continental journals, for the period late 18th c. to the early 1990s. An ongoing project that will eventually keyword index some 3500 journals in the humanities & social sciences. Includes book reviews.

Dissertations & Theses.
An electronic index of dissertations 1861-present that incorporates the indexing of Comprehensive Dissertation Index, as well as other print indexes (American Doctoral Dissertations). Indexes predominantly American dissertations, although it has become more international in scope in recent years. Includes abstracts of dissertations since 1981 & full text of recent UNC Dissertations.

The UNC-Chapel Hill catalog is still the most complete record of UNC-Chapel Hill's holdings. Use the "Journal Title" search. There should be a "hot link" from the catalog record for a print journal to the electronic version of that journal, if it is also electronically available.
