Columbia Gazetteer of the World
"The Columbia Gazetteer of the World has long been a standard geographic reference source. This online version makes the 1998 print edition accessible electronically, with a variety of search modes, including place names, works or phrases within a Gazetteer entry, and type of place. It includes over 165,000 place names, and will be updated continually and improved with new features, such as maps, census data, and population density." David Rumsey Historical Map Collection
"The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection has over 13,600 maps online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. Collection categories include antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, childrens and manuscript maps. Historical Map & Chart Project
This is a service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide digital access to historical nautical and aeronautical charts, topographic maps, and other cartographic products.

Images of Early Maps on the Web
Part of the History of Cartography site, this pages links to hundreds of Web sites offering digitized images of pre-1900 maps covering the entire world. Keywords: maps.
National Atlas of the United States
This provides electronic atlas coverage not only of the United States but also of Canada and Mexico. You can retrieve a variety of printable and dynamic maps on this site. Keywords: maps, geography.
North Carolina Maps
This site provides access to N. C. maps from the 1500s to the 1960s.

Historic Digital North Carolina Topographic Maps offer valuable historical information about landscape features from the late 1800s to the 1960s. Scales vary from 1:250,000 (15 minute coverage area) to 1:62,500 (7.5 minute coverage area). A few have even larger scales." These are georeferenced and compressed into JPEG2000 format. State Maps
This site allows you to retrieve road maps of all 50 states. Depending on the state, you may also be able to retrieve city and county maps and other related information. Keywords: maps, states.
TerraServer
Search by address in the United States and find a color aerial photograph, a black and white aerial photographs, and a topographic map, depending on availability. Date of each type is indicated. You can zoom in and out and change the size of the image. A similar site with additional features is Acme Mapper. Keywords: maps.
USA.gov Maps
On this site, you can view or purchase maps produced by the U. S. government. The categories are community, environment, health, historical, space, United States, weather, and world. Keywords: maps, demographics, historical, voting, agriculture, minerals, geology, water, parks, forests.
USGS Maps, Imagery, and Publications
United States Geological Survey offers access to many different map resources on this one site.

You can use the USGS Store to download or buy topographic maps; click on Map Locator.

Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. USGS Topographical Map Index by Stanford University Map Collection
This site will identify United States Geological Survey topographic maps at two scales, 1:100,000 and 1:24,000. Keywords: maps. topos.
WorldMapper
WorldMapper shows the relative size of countries depending of the factor shown: population, land area, deaths, income, wealth, poverty, education, and other variables. Over 600 maps in more than 30 categories are available. Keywords: maps, demographics, economics, society, culture, nations, health.
