- Columbia Gazetteer of the World
- "The Columbia Gazetteer of the World has long been a standard geographic reference source. This online version makes the 1998 print edition accessible electronically, with a variety of search modes, including place names, works or phrases within a Gazetteer entry, and type of place. It includes over 165,000 place names, and will be updated continually and improved with new features, such as maps, census data, and population density." - North Carolina Maps
- This site provides access to N. C. maps from the 1500s to the 1960s.
Historic Digital North Carolina Topographic Maps offer valuable historical information about landscape features from the late 1800s to the 1960s. Scales vary from 1:250,000 (15 minute coverage area) to 1:62,500 (7.5 minute coverage area). A few have even larger scales." These are georeferenced and compressed into JPEG2000 format.
