Electronic Indexes and Databases
- Anthropology Plus Anthropology Plus is a comprehensive index of journal articles in various fields of anthropology, as well as the related disciplines of ethnology, archaeology, folklore and material culture. It "provides citations to journal articles, reports, commentaries, and obituaries from over 2,500 periodicals and edited works." Coverage is international in scope, and dates back to the late 19th century.
- AnthroSource This resource, developed and maintained by the American Anthropological Association (AAA), includes: "a complete electronic archive of all AAA journals through 2003; seamless access to archival content housed at JSTOR for key AAA publications including American Anthropologist; and current issues for 11 of the AAA's most critical peer-reviewed publications." full text of articles is provided.
- Anthropology Bibliography (E-Ref CD-ROM) This CD-ROM includes catalog records for the items held in the Tozzer Library at Harvard University. Tozzer's collections are meant to support research in anthropology and all of its subfields. They are mainly in Germanic, Romance, Slavic and Scandinavian languages, with particular strengths in Mesoamerica and Mayan Studies.
- Academic Search Premier This multidisciplinary database covers a wide range of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It indexes peer-reviewed journals as well as magazines, newspapers and monographs, and search results can be quickly sorted by publication type. Of the publications indexed, Academic Search Premier provides full-text access for more than 4,000, dating back to 1975 in many cases.
- LexisNexis Academic This database provides full-text access to regional, national and international news. It indexes a wide variety of newspapers and other news sources from all over the world, as well as some legal and financial resources.
- Bibliographic Index Plus An excellent resource for finding bibliographies originally published as periodical articles, books, or sections of books, Bibliographic Index Plus is the online version of the serial publication Bibliographic Index. This resource covers bibliographies published in "English, German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Czech and other languages in the Roman alphabet," and offers some full-text access. Coverage dates back to 1984.
- America, History and Life This database covers various aspects of North American history. It indexes journal articles, books, book chapters, reviews and dissertations. Over 2,000 journals are covered, the majority of which published in English. This index has been in publication since 1964, and is updated monthly. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.
- Country Studies "This website contains the on-line versions of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army." This series provides historical overviews and descriptive analyses of "the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors." This series is not entirely inclusive, as it was initially meant to focus on lesser-known areas of the world. Currently, 101 countries and regions have been profiled.
- Dissertations and Theses This resource indexes United States dissertations dating back to 1861. "The full text of dissertations done at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997 on are available for free downloading in PDF format. Citations for dissertations from 1980 on include 350-word abstracts, while masters' theses from 1988 forward have 150 word abstracts. For both dissertations and theses, from 1997 on, the citations also provide 24 page previews in PDF format." You can search for dissertations by keyword, title, author, advisor, degree, institution, and a number of other fields.
- eHRAF Collection of Ethnography Particularly useful for cultural anthropologists, this collection provides access to annual installments from Human Relations Area Files, Inc. (HRAF). This resource indexes journals, monographs and manuscripts covering "cultural anthropology materials relating to cultural groups (past and present) both in North America and worldwide. A comprehensive search of the HRAF collection will necessitate the use of a microfiche set in Davis Reference, as well as the online file. In all formats, files on over three hundred and fifty cultural groups are covered; the files facilitate cross-cultural study of these groups by subject."
- EIU Country Reports These reports provide information on current conditions in nearly 200 countries. Particularly useful for economic and political information, these reports provide data, analyze new developments, and provide political and economic forecasts for the future. You can read the full country reports, or navigate by topic to locate relevant information.
- Expanded Academic ASAP This multidisciplinary database indexes core publications in "every major academic concentration," and also provides access to professional journals and national news coverage. Full-text is available for many entries. Expanded Academic ASAP also provides a citation generator, which is compatible with bibliographic management software such as RefWorks, EndNote, and ProCite.
- GenderWatch This resource, which focuses on women's and gender issues, provides international coverage of a variety of publications, including journals, magazines, newsletters and conference proceedings. GenderWatch is a full-text collection, with material dating back to the mid-1970s. Topics covered include: "family, childbirth, birth control, daycare, domestic abuse, work and the workplace, sexual harassment, aging, aging parents, body image, eating disorders and social and societal roles."
- Global Newsbank This resource provides full-text access to international news broadcasts and summaries, from hundreds of sources. Its wide and thorough coverage allows for a comparative perspective on key issues discussed in the international news. News from every area in the world is indexed, and all articles and broadcasts have been translated into English.
- HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index) "Provides periodicals indexing for Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the US-Mexico border region and Hispanics in the US. HAPI Online is the searchable Web version of the Hispanic American Periodicals Index. HAPI is your source for authoritative, worldwide information about Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the United States-Mexico border region, and Hispanics in the United States. From analyses of current political, economic, and social issues to unique coverage of Latin American arts and letters, HAPI Online contains complete bibliographic citations to articles, book reviews, documents, original literary works, and other materials appearing in more than 400 key social science and humanities journals published throughout the world" (Source: vendor website).
- HLAS Online (Handbook of Latin America Studies) An excellent resource for scholars interested in various aspects of Latin American Studies, this resource is a multidisciplinary bibliography on Latin America. Focused in the humanities and social sciences, the works cited are selected and annotated by Latin American scholars. The Handbook is edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress, and the online version is updated weekly.
- Historical Abstracts This database provides abstracts for over half a million publications covering world history since 1450. The United States and Canada are excluded from coverage, but the rest of the world is represented. More than 2,000 journals are indexed, and all citations are written in English. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.
- IBZ Online (Internationale Bibliographie der Zeitschriftenliteratur) "The IBZ Online is a universal index of periodical literature covering basic research from all fields of knowledge, and is particularly strong in the humanities and the social sciences." It is particularly notable for being a multilingual resource, and its scope is international. IBZ Online indexes more than 11,000 periodicals, a significant percentage of all periodicals published in Europe. To change the default search screen from German to English, click on the Union Jack icon in the top left of your screen.
- Index to Foreign Broadcast Information Service (1991-1996) (E Docs CD-ROM)
- International Bibliography of the Social Sciences Providing broad coverage of the social sciences, the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) combines four social science indexes that were previously separate, including the International Bibliography of Anthropology. The search interface allows for searches ranging from simple to quite complex. IBSS indexes more than 2,700 journals and 7,000 books annually. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.
- Latin American Studies (E-Ref CD-ROM)
- LexisNexis Statistical This service "provides indexing and abstracts from three databases: American Statistics Index (ASI), Statistical Reference Index (SRI), and Index to International Statistics (IIS). The databases can be searched individually or as a group." Together, these provide a variety of statistics from the United States and abroad. Indexing in ASI dates back to 1973, SRI is covered back to 1980, and IIS dates back to 1983. LexisNexis Statistical's excellent search interface allows for sophisticated searching.
- MLA International Bibliography Plus Full Text via Chadwick-Healey's LiteratureOnline Produced and maintained by the Modern Language Association, the MLA International Bibliography is a primary index for literature and related topics, including folklore, cultural studies, and lingustics. Full-text access is provided in many cases, and indexing dates back to 1926.
- MasterFILE Premier This multidisciplinary database provides full-text access to articles published in more than 2,700 periodicals. The focus is on popular periodicals, but some peer-reviewed sources are indexed as well.
- OECD Index (E-Docs CD-ROM) This CD-ROM indexes a variety of publications of the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), an international agency involved in economics and energy research.
- PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) International with ARCHIVE PAIS provides a bibliographic index to publications in public policy, social policy, and general social sciences. The database indexes a variety of publications, including journal articles, books, government documents, statistics, reports, websites and more. Bibliographic indexing ranges from 1915 to the present.
- PsycINFO Maintained by the American Psychological Association (APA), this comprehensive database provides full-text access to publications in psychology and related fields, including: medicine, social work, criminology, and the social sciences in general. Indexing is provided for journal articles, books, dissertations, technical reports, and other publications, dating back to 1887.
- Population Index Published since 1935, this index provides citations to internationally published literature on population topics. The electronic database, which includes more than 40,000 abstracts of population literature published between 1986 and 1999, is both searchable and browseable. Searching is possible by author, keyword, region, year, and other fields.
- ATLA Religion Index This index of journal articles, book reviews, and essay collections covers various topics relating to religion. Coverage is from 1949 to the present, and the index is updated twice yearly. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.
- Social Sciences Citation Index Particularly useful for citation analysis, the Social Sciences Citation Index broadly covers journal articles in the social sciences, including anthropology. Updated at a rate of 2,800 new articles and 50,000 new cited references per week, the database now indexes nearly 3 million articles. Both general searching and cited reference searching are possible. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.
- Sociological Abstracts Sociological Abstracts includes abstracts of sociological articles from more than 2,500 international journals. Sociological topics in other fields, including anthropology, are also covered. The journals indexed hail from more than 55 countries, and abstracts of articles written in more than 30 languages can be found. While most abstracts refer to articles published in journals, some conference papers and books are included as well. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.
- UNBISnet This database provides access to the UNBIS, or the United Nations Bibliographic Information System. Citations to UN documents, such as major UN Resolutions, voting information, and agenda records, is included. Citations to non-UN materials, including monographs, journal articles, and publications of various governments and organizations, are also included. Newer features include keyword searching and a browseable search list.
- Women's Studies International Because Women's Studies is interdisciplinary by nature, this database is interdisciplinary as well. Women's Studies International provides access to core Women's Studies literature. Full-text is provided for many cited journal articles, and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.
- WorldCat WorldCat is an online union catalog representing the holdings of several thousand libraries around the world. "This database includes bibliographic records for books, dissertations, journals, audio-visual materials and manuscripts, some written as early as the 12th century." Unlike many other databases mentioned earlier, WorldCat does not provide bibliographic citations to individual articles or book chapters.
- Worldwide Political Science Abstracts This database provides citations and abstracts for journal articles in political science and related fields, including international studies and public policy. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.

Studies in Third World Societies
Each of these can be accessed by searching the series title in the online catalog; however, they will also appear under the subject headings for specific countries. Items in these series will not have the same call number. These items deal with health care, agriculture, and human ecology, among other topics. Note that these books will focus on a specific topic within a specific geographic region.
The materials listed above are general research and reference tools in anthropology. Reference contains many additional resources that pertain to subdisciplines and related fields of study.
The Human Relations Area Files microfiche collection (guides for which are on Row 19) provides bibliographic access to material on world cultures. The Outline of World Cultures and Outline of Cultural Materials describe specific segments of the collection. If you would like assistance using the Human Relations Area Files, please inquire at the reference desk. More recent years of this tool are available through electronic indexes and databases as eHRAF.
