Indexes, Abstracting Services, and Databases-Electronically Accessible

Sociological Abstracts This database provides abstracts of journal articles, conference papers, dissertations, and other publications dealing with sociology and related disciplines. Links to full text are provided where available, and can be accessed by clicking on the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.

SSCI This multidisciplinary index broadly covers journal publications in the social sciences. It indexes about 1,700 journals across a variety of disciplines. To be certain that you are searching only the Social Sciences Citation Index, first select the type of search you want (general, cited reference, or advanced), and then make sure that "Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)" is the only citation database selected. While full text access is not provided by the database, you can still click on the "Find @ UNC" icon to see if we have an electronic copy of the article you need.

Population Index Published since 1935, this index provides citations to internationally published literature on population-related topics. It serves as an annotated bibliography of books, articles, and other publications in the field of population. The electronic database, which includes more than 40,000 abstracts of population literature published between 1986 and 1999, is both searchable and browseable. Searching is possible by author, keyword, region, year, and other fields.

Dissertations and Theses This index covers U.S. dissertations dating back to 1861, and as current as last semester. Abstracts are provided, and all dissertations completed at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1997 are available in PDF format. To search for dissertations in sociology or another area, select "Subject name/code" in the search menu, and click on the "Browse subjects" link to choose the appropriate subject.

International Bibliography of the Social Sciences Providing broad coverage of the social sciences, the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) combines four indexes that were previously separate, including the International Bibliography of Sociology. The search interface allows for searches ranging from simple to quite sophisticated. IBSS indexes more than 2,700 journals and 7,000 books annually. Full text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.

ASSIA: Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts ASSIA indexes journal articles from more than 650 different publications. Subjects covered include sociology and a number of related topics, including education, ethnic and family studies, and social work. Full text is not provided by the database, but the full text of some articles can be accessed by clicking the "Find @ UNC" icon.

Essay and General Literature Index This database provides access to thousands of essays included in collected works and anthologies. It covers the humanities and the social sciences broadly. References to essays in more than 300 collections and twenty serial publications are included. Look for the "Find @ UNC" icon to find out if full text is available.

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts This database provides citations and abstracts for journal articles in political science and related fields, including international studies and public policy. Full-text of some articles is available and can be accessed by clicking the Old Well "Find @ UNC" icon.

PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) International with ARCHIVE PAIS provides a bibliographic index to research and publications in public policy, social policy, and general social sciences. The database indexes a variety of publications, including journal articles, books, government documents, statistics, reports, websites and more. Bibliographic indexing ranges from 1915 to the present. As with many of the previously described electronic indexes, full text to some articles indexed in PAIS can be accessed by clicking on the "Find @ UNC" icon.

Academic Search Premier A major multidisciplinary database, Academic Search Premier indexes both popular and scholarly publications in a variety of fields. Results can be sorted by publication type, and full text access is provided in many cases. Look for the "HTML Full Text" or "PDF Full Text" links, or click on the "Find @ UNC" icon to access this full text.

Family and Society Studies Worldwide The relationship between family and society is a major topic of interest within the discipline of social work. This database combines three different indexes covering this topic: Family and Society Studies, 1970 to present, National Clearinghouse on Family Violence, Health Canada, and U.S. Military Family Resource Center Documents Database. Coverage dates back to 1970. To read a document's abstract, click on the "view Database Record with DOI link." To find full text, look for the "Find @ UNC" icon to see if UNC has an electronic copy of the document.

Bibliographic Index Plus An excellent resource for finding bibliographies originally published as periodical articles, books, or sections of books, Bibliographic Index Plus is the online version of the print publication Bibliographic Index. This resource covers bibliographies published in "English, German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Czech and other languages in the Roman alphabet," and offers some full text access. Coverage dates back to 1984.

MasterFILE Premier Also multidisciplinary, MasterFILE Premier provides bibliographic information and abstracts for articles from more than 2,700 periodicals. Search results can be sorted by publication type (Periodicals, Newspapers, Primary Source Documents, etc.). Full text access to articles is provided in many cases, through the "HTML Full Text" or "PDF Full Text" links, or the "Find @ UNC" icon.

IngentaConnect This electronic index offers a large collection of references to scholarly and professional articles across academic fields. There are no "Find @ UNC" icons in this database, but you can identify articles with full text by looking for the "F" icon, which stands for "free content," or the "S" for "subscribed content," located directly to the left of the article title on the search results page.

Expanded Academic ASAP This multidisciplinary database aims to cover literature in all major academic concentrations, including sociology. Abstracts for both popular and peer-reviewed articles are included, as well as some news articles. Links to full text are provided when this text is available. This database also includes a useful "How to Cite" feature for each article. To use this feature, click on the hand and book icon.

WorldCat While it is not an article database, WorldCat is an excellent resource for finding books and print journals. It serves as an online union catalog that represents the holdings of thousands of libraries around the world. Bibliographic records for books, dissertations, periodicals, media, and other materials are included. Since this is not an article database, bibliographic references to individual articles are not included.
