This site provides tips on searching the 600 numismatic pieces contained in the Paper Currency & Banknotes database.

For Russian and Ukrainian currency in the database, text from both the obverse and reverse sides has been transliterated from the vernacular according to the Library of Congress transliteration tables for Cyrillic alphabets. For example, the old Russian orthography symbol 'ѣ' is transliterated into its romanized equivalent 'ie'.

Once a search is successfuly conducted, individual records can be viewed by selecting the Accession Number on the left side of the screen. By clicking on this number, users access the full record of descriptive information and two thumbnail images linking to a mid-size (600 x 340) image of the obverse and reverse sides of each item. Clicking on a mid-size image leads to a high-resolution (160K - 3.72MB) image of either the obverse or reverse sides. Use the browser's back arrow to return to the mid-size image and then the full descriptive record.

Keyword Searching

Searching can be conducted by entering keywords or strings of text as it appears within each record. This feature allows the user to conduct a search on a keyword and on grammatically correct derivations of the search word by selecting either the Contains or Starts With buttons. Keyword searching using either the Contains function or the Starts With function is not case sensitive.

The Contains function searches for keywords located in any position within the database fields. For example, a search for Gosudar, a truncated derivation of the word Gosudarstvo (State), retrieves 628 records that contain some form of derivation of Gosudar. In this example, these derivations include the words Gosudarstvennoe, Gosudarstvennyi, Gosudarstvennye, Gosudarstvennago and Gosudarstva. These derivations are retrieved from all of the database fields.

The Starts With function searches for words located at the beginning of a database field. For example, a search for Gosudar will retrieve 568 records that contain some form of derivation of Gosudar that appears at the beginning of any field. However, the same search produces 628 records if the Contains function is selected instead of the Starts With function as is shown in the previous example.

Search by Money Type

Searching can be done by selecting one of 18 different money types from the drop down menu under Search by Money Type. For example, to view all instances of the money type Gosudarstvennyi kreditnyi bilet (State Banknote) from the Paper Currency & Banknotes database, simply select that type and click on the Search button located on the right. In this example, the search would return 367 records for the money type Gosudarstvennyi kreditnyi bilet.

Search by Category of Currency

Searching can be done by selecting one of 10 categories of currency from the drop down menu under Search by Category of Currency. For example, to view all instances of the category Vremennoe Pravitel'stvo (Provisional Government), simply select that category and click on the Search button located on the right. In this example, the search would retrieve 35 records for the category of currency Vremennoe Pravitel'stvo in the category field.
