Talk by Cartoonist John Branch, Exhibit of Student Cartooning at UNC

A 1975 Daily Tar Heel cartoon by John Branch
Political cartoonist John Branch will deliver the fifth Gladys Hall Coates University History Lecture on April 17. His talk, "A Tar Heel Cartoonist in Texas: Drawing the Line in the Lone Star State," will describe his own career, from his student cartooning days at UNC's Daily Tar Heel in the 1970s, to his current position as editorial cartoonist with the San Antonio Express-News.
The Gladys Hall Coates University History Lecture, sponsored by the North Carolina Collection in Wilson Library, honors the late Coates, an avid historian of the University who died in 2002. She and her husband, Albert Coates, founded UNC-Chapel Hill's Institute of Government, now the School of Government.
The lecture accompanies the exhibition Lines of Humor, Shades of Controversy: A Century of Student Cartooning at UNC, on view in the North Carolina Collection Gallery. The exhibition features 177 cartoons from undergraduate publications at UNC between 1907 and 2006. Highlights include two original cartoons by Jeff MacNelly, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and creator of the comic strip Shoe.
Lines of Humor, Shades of Controversy will be on exhibit through May 31 in the North Carolina Collection Gallery on the main floor of Wilson Library. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. For information or to schedule a tour, call (919) 962-1172 or visit the Gallery online.
