Remembering Walter R. Davis
Statement from Sarah C. Michalak, University Librarian

Walter Davis, 1985
With the University, we are saddened at news of the death of our friend, Walter R. Davis.
UNC's libraries owe a particular debt to Mr. Davis. Perhaps best-known is his successful campaign to obtain funding for the magnificent library that now bears his name.
Over the years, Mr. Davis demonstrated his commitment to the Library and the University in many ways. Through his continued advocacy, he arranged for private support to acquire tens of thousands of books during the mid-1990s, at a time when reduced state budgets would otherwise have caused our collection programs to lose ground. These volumes continue to make a profound difference for the students and faculty of the University, and the many North Carolinians who rely upon Carolina's libraries.
We remain grateful for Walter Davis's friendship, vision, and generosity.
