Feb. 26, 2009 - Grammy-winning jazz guitarist and composer Bill Frisell will perform with multi-instrumentalist Greg Leisz at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on March 22, at 7 p.m. The Carolina Union Box Office will distribute free tickets for the public concert, which will take place in the Carolina Union Great Hall. The Southern Folklife Collection in the Wilson Special Collections Library is the program sponsor.

The concert is a great opportunity for music and guitar fans, says Steve Weiss, sound and image librarian for the Southern Folklife Collection. "Frisell is one of the greatest musicians of his generation. His ability to draw broadly from American roots music makes for exciting listening and new ways of thinking beyond genre."

Down Beat Magazine's critics have repeatedly named Bill Frisell "Guitarist of the year," beginning in 1998. The New York Times says Frisell's mix of rock, country, jazz, and blues is a "fruitful meditation on American music" that plays up both passion and tenderness.

Frisell, who has recorded more than 33 albums, told New York's Village Voice, "It's like a real world when I play, where I can do all the things I can't do in real life."

Leisz (pronounced "Lease") has played with artists including Tracy Chapman, The Smashing Pumpkins, Lucinda Williams, Joni Mitchell, and Alison Krauss. He is a frequent collaborator with Frisell.
