Black History Month Resources
February is Black History Month. Resources throughout the library support research and learning about the contributions of African-Americans.
-
Libraries with strong collections related to black history include the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History Library, Davis Library, Wilson Library, the Sloane Art Library, and the Music Library.
-
The Stone Center Library's searchable Web guide to black culture and history sites points to more than 900 sites, each described and grouped by subject.
-
The library's digital collections are rich in primary documents related to black history. Of special interest are Documenting the American South, the Virtual Museum of UNC history, and the Slavery and the Making of the University online exhibit.
-
More than two dozen research databases and more than seventy online journals explore topics related to black history, from the A.M.E. Church Review to the Twentieth-Century African-American Poetry database. (Many of these resources require a UNC PID for off-campus access.)
-
Movies relevant to Black History Month are in the Media Resources Center in the Undergraduate Library.
-
Currently on exhibit in the Manuscripts Department on the fourth floor of Wilson Library is "I Raised My Hand to Volunteer: Students Protest in 1960s Chapel Hill." The exhibit includes documents and artifacts related to the desegregation of Chapel Hill businesses and the role of UNC's Black Student Movement in supporting campus food worker strikes in 1969 to protest discriminatory labor practices.
-
A panel discussion, "Stomping Down: The Foodworkers Strike of 1969 and the Black Student Movement," will be held in conjunction with the student protest exhibit on Tuesday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History. A reception will begin at 5 p.m. The reception and discussion are free and open to the public.
