Exhibit Celebrates Grad School Centennial
The exhibit titled "Crowning Glory" traces the growth and development of graduate education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It is on display in the Manuscripts Department in Wilson Library through December 2003.
Though the Graduate School (or Department, as it was first called) was established in 1903, graduate education at the University can actually be traced back to 1854, when first mention was made in the annual catalog of coursework leading to the degree of master of arts.
With materials drawn from University Archives, the Southern Historical Collection, the North Carolina Collection, and Photographic Archives, the exhibit highlights the history of graduate studies and research at Carolina through photographs, books, original letters and documents, and University publications--and also celebrates the long collaboration between the Library and graduate education on our campus.
Janis Holder, University Archivist, and Susan Ballinger, Assistant University Archivist created the exhibit, and John E. White, Public Services Assistant, prepared and mounted it.
