Campus dial-in modem pool ends Aug 4th

This is a reminder to all that, as announced several times since the beginning of the summer, this service (the UNC Modem Pool/962-9911, 962-9991 Dial-In Service) will be discontinued on August 4th, 2003 at 7:00AM. If you have been using dial-up communications software on your computer to access the campus through 962-9911 or 962-9991, you should make plans now to look for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) subscription for either dial-up, DSL, or cable modem connectivity from off-campus.

As a direct result of the budget cuts set for this new fiscal year, and also due to the significantly outdated and failing equipment associated with this legacy service, the UNC Modem Pool will be permanently disconnected and removed from service on Monday, August 4th, 2003 at 7AM.

Over the years, as the growth in Internet Service Provider (ISP) subscriptions has escalated throughout the Triangle area, we have reduced the number of lines in this legacy service from a peak of 160 phone lines down to the current number of 32. We have seen the requirement for this service and our ability to keep the old hardware running drastically reduced. As a result, in light of the requirement for significant budget reductions this year, this service was targeted as being the least critical of the services we currently provide and the one with the most available alternatives elsewhere in the marketplace.

If you have questions about what your options are in the ISP arena, contact the IT Response Center at 962-HELP. You can also go to http://help.unc.edu/ and search for "ISP".
