June 20 - The Manuscripts Department in Wilson Library will highlight staff picks from the collection in the exhibit "Look What We Found!: Manuscripts Department Staff Discoveries." On display through Oct. 31 will be nearly 40 items, including a handwritten description of a hurricane that decimated New Orleans in 1860, a scrapbook documenting a 1939 cross-country automobile trip, and a poster from the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival.
Rachel Canada, administrative assistant in the Manuscripts Department, organized the exhibit. "Our collections are so rich and varied," she said. "We wanted to showcase things that a researcher wouldn't necessarily come across or might not even know we have."
Canada described the exhibit as "highly personal." Her colleagues, from student assistants on up to the head of the department, each selected one or two items and wrote brief descriptions, including reasons for their selection. "It's a chance to learn more about the collection, and also the people who work here," she said.
The Manuscripts Department is on the fourth floor of Wilson Library. Hours are 9 a.m to 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m Saturdays. For exhibit information, contact Rachel Canada (919-962-1345).
