Nov. 13 - Bill Powell, widely considered the "dean" of North Carolina historians, will discuss his newly published "Encyclopedia of North Carolina" at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Thursday, Nov. 30.

The free public event sponsored by Friends of the Library will begin at 6 p.m. William Friday, president emeritus of the UNC System and host of UNC-TV's "North Carolina People," will interview Powell about North Carolina history and Powell's experience developing and editing the encyclopedia. After the interview, Powell will sign copies of the book, which will be sold at the event by the Bull's Head Bookshop.

The "Encyclopedia of North Carolina" presents more than 2,000 entries in 1,360 pages that capture the figures, events, places, politics, and trends that have characterized North Carolina throughout its history. It was published this month by the University of North Carolina Press in association with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library.

Powell, a Statesville native who has lived in North Carolina his entire life, is a former curator of the North Carolina Collection in UNC's library. In 1973, he became professor of history at UNC, teaching more than 6,000 students before he retired in 1986.

Fifteen years in production and a lifetime in the making, the "Encyclopedia" is a follow-up to other accounts of the state edited by Powell. "The North Carolina Gazetteer" (1968) and the "Dictionary of North Carolina Biography" (six volumes, 1979-96) also were published by UNC Press.
