Orville Hicks, North Carolina Storyteller

Orville Hicks, a traditional storyteller from Watauga County, N.C., will be at UNC's Wilson Library on Friday, Sept. 7 for a free public performance from 10 to 11 a.m.

Hicks is known especially for his "Jack Tales," a traditional genre featuring a wily character named Jack who triumphs over trouble through luck and wit. Hicks also weaves other traditional tales into his performances, as well as stories from his own life and upbringing in the southern mountains.

Hicks' performance at UNC is sponsored by the Center for the Study of the American South, the Curriculum in American Studies, the Curriculum in Folklore, and the Southern Folklife Collection.
