Sept. 8 - The Pine Leaf Boys, a Louisiana Cajun and Creole band, will perform in the Pit at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Monday, Sept. 18. The Southern Folklife Collection at UNC's University Library is sponsoring the free lunch-time concert.
The Pine Leaf Boys play a traditional Cajun sound "while allowing it to breathe and stretch with those who play it," according to the musicians' website. OffBeat Magazine called the group "one of the most talented aggregations to emerge in some time."
"We wanted people to experience contemporary folk music and to connect that with the outstanding music collections right here in the UNC libraries," said Steve Weiss, head of the Southern Folklife Collection (SFC).
The SFC is one of the nation's leading archives for the study of American folk music and popular culture, said Weiss. The collection is especially rich in recordings, photographs, and artifacts that document country-western, hillbilly, bluegrass, blues, gospel, Cajun and zydeco musics.
The SFC is also home to the records of the Goldband Recording Corporation of Lake Charles, La., noted Weiss. Goldband helped to popularize Cajun and zydeco music with national audiences beginning in the 1940s.
"We see having the Pine Leaf Boys here as a continuation of and tribute to that tradition," said Weiss.
The concert will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In case of rain, the concert will move indoors to the Pleasants Family Assembly Room of the Louis Round Wilson Library.
