Join the Friends of the Library for a free program with two North Carolina literary favorites. Sarah Messer, assistant professor of creative writing at UNC-Wilmington, will talk about her recent book Red House: Being a Mostly Accurate Account of New England's Oldest Continuously Lived-In House. Author Allan Gurganus will introduce her.
Messer's father purchased Red House from a descendent of Walter Hatch, who built it in 1647. When Red House was published in 2004, Booklist wrote that "Messer brings a poet's ear, an architect's eye, a historian's attention to detail, and her own firsthand experiences as a resident" to her alternating histories of the Messer and Hatch families.
Gurganus, author of novels including Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, Plays Well With Others, and The Practical Heart, lives and writes in Hillsborough, NC.
