Cancellation of Selected Serial Subscriptions
In spring 2006, the University Library embarked upon a review of serially published materials, including print and electronic journals, electronic databases, and some standing orders in order to cut its expenditures by $100,000. To achieve this goal, each subscribing unit (usually a department or school) was required to cut its total serials allocation by approximately 2.43%. Bibliographers, departmental librarians, and other selectors worked in close consultation with faculty in those units to identify titles for cancellation.The library initiated this project for many reasons. Rising costs, high rates of inflation, and an array of new products have resulted in subscription fees that have outstripped the library's materials budget. For several years, end-of-fiscal-year one-time money from the university administration has been necessary to help cover costs. The dependence on such funding for the university's information resources is unsustainable.
In addition, continuous evaluation of collections and periodic cancellation projects ensure that the materials purchased (or accessed) are supporting research and teaching needs. Finally, in many instances the only funding available for subscriptions to new journals and databases is that accruing from cancellation of existing serial subscriptions.
The library will begin canceling titles in August. Many subscriptions will cease in January 2007; others will end whenever the current subscription expires. Access to articles no longer available on campus electronically or in print will be available through Interlibrary Loan.
