Favored by Fortune: George W. Watts and the Hills of Durham is the winner of the 2004 Old North State Award for Nonfiction given by the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association. Favored by Fortune, written by Greensboro journalist Howard Covington, Jr., and published by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library, is a collective biography that recounts the story of one of the state's leading families. Over four generations George Washington Watts, John Sprunt Hill, George Watts Hill, and George Watts Hill Jr. shaped the Tar Heel State through their business acumen, government service, visionary advocacy, and philanthropy. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University Library are among the many institutions to benefit from their generosity.
