Creativity and Resistance: Maroon Cultures in the Americas
Between the 16th and 19th centuries, thousands of enslaved Africans escaped from slavery and formed communities of their own throughout the Caribbean and the Americas. The people of these communities were known as Maroons. This website “focuses on contemporary Maroon peoples of Jamaica, French Guiana, Suriname, and the Seminole community along the United States and Mexican border.” The site includes information on Maroon history, culture, and lifestyle as well as a teacher’s guide and a collection of Maroon recipes.
