Ambrotype, Daniel Williams (1838-1862).
Daniel Williams was born near Willeyton in Gates County, NC< on November 14, 1838. He moved further south (probably Alabama) in 1859 and worked as a teacher. When the Civil War started he joined an Alabama regiment. He was wounded at Shiloh and died in a St. Louis hospital in 1862.

Furnifold McLendel Simmons (1854-1940) served in the United States Senate for thirty years. Nicknamed "The Great White Father," Simmons led the white supremacy campaigns of 1898 and 1900. In those campaigns, Democrats broke the Republican-Populist coalition that had gained power in North Carolina politics.
