Searching the Catalog

If you know the name of the artist, try a subject, keyword, and/or author search under the name of the artist (e.g. Alexander Calder). Also try adding the following keyword search terms along with the artist's name:

  • exhibitions
  • interviews
  • biography
  • criticism and interpretation
  • notebooks, sketchbooks, etc.

e.g. Alexander Calder and exhibitions

To find catalogues raisonnés* for an artist, try the following keyword searches:

  • catalogue raisonné and the artist's name (e.g. catalogue raisonné and Andy Warhol)
  • werkverzeichnis and the artist's name
  • complete paintings/drawings/prints or sculpture and the artist's name

*A catalogue raisonné is a comprehensive list of works created by an artist, or work created in a particular medium by an artist. Reproductions of the artworks are also included, along with the date, provenance, location and history of the artist and their work.

TIP: Use the Refine Your Search box on the left-hand side to sift through your results and find the most relevant titles.

Example: If you search for "da vinci" you'll get 732 results. Expand the Subject tab under Refine Your Search and you'll see that 26 of these titles fall under the subject heading "Brown, Dan." Instead of scrolling through your search results from the top, look through the results grouped under the more relevant subject headings. The Language tab can also be very useful.
