Knowing the date when counties were formed can be of great help in determining the date of an undated map, or verifying the publication date of a dated map. For example, a map showing Durham county could have been published no earlier than 1881, when that county was formed from parts of Orange and Wake Counties. Likewise, a map showing Watauga County (established 1849) but not Wilson County (established 1855) was most likely published in the early 1850s.
It is worth examining the presence of counties on state maps, even when there is a publication or copyright date. Many map publishers would often purchase existing plates or simply copy maps from older atlases and change little more than the date. Thus a map listed with a publication date of 1885 may very well show North Carolina as it looked in 1875.
