The Division of Academic Affairs was established in 1954 and included all of the academic units in the university exclusive of Health Affairs and the Graduate School. The Library, along with various centers and institutes, was also part of the division.
The division's chief administrative officer initially had the title Chairman and, subsequently, Dean of the Faculty, Vice Chancellor of the University, Provost, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Provost, and currently, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. Until 1997, there was a parallel position that had administrative oversight of the academic units in the Division of Health Affairs as well as the health-related centers and institutes. This position, known for most of its duration as the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, was eliminated in 1997, and the Provost assumed oversight of academic units in both the Division of Academic Affairs and the Division of Health Affairs.
The record groups listed below belong to the original Division of Academic Affairs. See also: Academic Affairs Library; Graduate School; Health Affairs.- Academic Affairs Library

The Academic Affairs Library is one of the three separately administered libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The others are the Health Sciences Library and the Law Library. The University Librarian, who heads the Academic Affairs Library, also serves as the Associate Provost for Libraries and is responsible for coordinating the budget requests of the three libraries.
The Academic Affairs Library includes the special collections, the Undergraduate Library, and numerous departmental libraries in addition to the main library. It is the successor to the University's first library, established in 1795.
- Athletics
The Department of Athletics, headed by the Director of Athletics, administers the university's intercollegiate athletics program. It is not involved in the teaching of physical education, which is an academic program.
- Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the university. From the founding of the university in 1789 until 1932, the Board was a 40-member body elected by the North Carolina General Assembly. From the creation of the Consolidated University system in 1932 until 1972, there were no separate boards of trustees for the constituent campuses; a single, 100-member Board governed the system. After the expansion of the system in 1972 to include 16 campuses, individual boards were created for each campus and a Board of Governors was constituted as the governing body for the new University of North Carolina System.
The record groups listed below derive from the original Board of Trustees and from the post-1972 Board appointed to govern the Chapel Hill campus. For records of the governing bodies of the University of North Carolina System, see University of North Carolina (System).- Chancellor's Office

Prior to the creation of the Consolidated University system in 1932, the title of the administrative head of the University at Chapel Hill was President. However, the head of the new system was designated President, and Frank Porter Graham, who was President of the Chapel Hill campus at the time of consolidation, became President of the system. New titles, along with more narrowly defined responsibilities, were assigned to the chief administrative officers of the constituent campuses. The position of Dean of Administration was established in 1934 as the chief administrative officer of the Chapel Hill campus of the Consolidated University. Robert Burton House, who had served as Executive Secretary to Graham since 1926, became the first Dean of Administration in 1934. In 1945, his title changed to Chancellor.
The record groups listed below include the records of each Chancellor and those of campus administrators based in the Chancellor's office.- Faculty Governance
Included here is the finding aid for the records of the university's faculty as an official body. This large record group contains the records of faculty committees, both standing and special, as well as the records of the Faculty Council. Formal faculty meetings have been held since at least 1799.

The Division of Finance and Administration is the successor to the Division of Business and Finance, which was established in 1970 to handle the university's budget, business operations, facilities planning and maintenance, security, and related functions.
The title of the Division head was, initially, Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance. In April 1996, in conjunction with a university-wide administrative reorganization, the title changed to Vice Chancellor for Administration, and, in August 1998, it changed to Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration.
Note that the records of the Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance contain records of earlier financial administrators, including a series of historical account books dating to 1789.- Graduate School
The university began offering graduate courses after its reopening in 1875 and awarded its first Ph.D. degree in 1883. But it was not until 1903 that the various graduate offerings were brought into a single department (later school) under the supervision of a dean.
Prior to 1965 and again from 1978 to 1989, the Dean of the Graduate School had responsibility for research administration as well as graduate programs. From 1969 to 1989, the Dean also had vice chancellor status.
Currently, the Dean of the Graduate School reports to the Provost and no longer has responsibility for research administration. The majority of the Dean's records listed below deal with graduate programs, but they do contain some files related to the Office of Research Services. For more records dealing with research administration, see Research and Economic Development.- Health Affairs

It consists of the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health; until recently, it also included a number of health-related research centers, institutes, and programs.
The title of the Division head was, initially, Administrator for Health and Medical Affairs, but, for most of its duration, the position was titled Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs. In 1996, the title of the position changed to Vice Provost for Health Affairs, and, in 1997, it was eliminated. At that time, the Provost assumed oversight of the Health Affairs units.- Information Technology
- President's Office (pre-1932)
Before the establishment of the Consolidated University of North Carolina system in 1932, the chief administrative officer of the campus at Chapel Hill had the title President. In 1932, the head of the consolidated system was designated President, and new titles, along with more narrowly defined responsibilities, were assigned to the chief administrative officers of the constituent campuses.
The majority of the surviving records of the University Presidents from 1794 to 1930 are in a large group of chronologically arranged records known as University of North Carolina Papers, which also include some of the 18th and 19th-century records of the Secretary-Treasurer of the Board of Trustees. The records of Frank Porter Graham as President of the Chapel Hill campus from 1930 to 1932 are arranged as a separate group.

The Division of Research and Economic Development, created in 2003, is the successor to the Division of Graduate Studies and Research. Headed by the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, it supports the university's research mission and leads the university's efforts in economic development.
Responsibility for the university's graduate programs and for research administration has, at times, resided in a single office and, at other times, in separate offices. Prior to 2003, the Dean of the Graduate School reported to the Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research; in 2003, the Dean began reporting to the Provost. See also Graduate School.

The Division of Student Affairs, established in 1954, provides extracurricular programs and services for students of the university and oversees student organizations. Its goal is to enhance the quality of student life outside the classroom and to foster a sense of community on campus. Prior to the creation of the Division, responsibility for student welfare was vested in a series of deans. Records of those deans are also covered in this section. For more on student organizations, see Student Organizations and Activities.
Please note that the Division of Student Affairs is not responsible for student academic records. The finding aid for the student records currently in University Archives is located under University Affairs.- Student Organizations and Activities

The Division of University Advancement, headed by the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, includes the offices responsible for the university's private fundraising and for the management of its relations with its various external constituencies. The latter include corporations, foundations, government entities, and the media.
The university's unified development program began in 1952 with the establishment of the Office of University Development. In 1973, the Division of Development and Public Service was created; its name changed to Division of Development and University Relations in 1985. In 1995, the position of Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations was eliminated, but it was reestablished in 1996 as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.- University Affairs
The Division of University Affairs was established in 1972 as the Division of Administration; its name changed to Division of University Affairs in 1980. It included the campus offices responsible for admissions, academic recordkeeping, institutional research, and student aid. Initially, it also included the Personnel Department, which had responsibility for non-academic personnel.
Through a series of administrative reorganizations, the units in the Division of University Affairs were moved to other divisions. By 1990, the Vice Chancellor for University Affairs no longer had oversight of any of the Division's previous units. Instead, his primary duty was to act as an assistant to the Chancellor for minority affairs. In 1996, both the Division and the vice chancellorship were eliminated, and the Office of Minority Affairs was created.- University-Affiliated Organizations

Included here are finding aids for the records of various offices and bodies within the University of North Carolina (System), including those of the Presidents, Trustees, and Governors of the System. These records embrace both the Consolidated University and the current University System.
The Consolidated University was established in 1932 by an act of the state's General Assembly. At that time, it included the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina State College in Raleigh, and Woman's College in Greensboro. A single Board of Trustees governed the three campuses. During the 1960s, the number of campuses in the Consolidated system doubled, and in 1963 the names of the original three changed. The University of North Carolina became the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Woman's College became the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and North Carolina State College became North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. The latter was changed again in 1965 to North Carolina State University at Raleigh (now North Carolina State University). Also in 1965, the General Assembly made Charlotte College, which it renamed University of North Carolina at Charlotte, part of the Consolidated University. Two more campuses were added in 1969: Asheville-Biltmore College, which became the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and Wilmington College, which became the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
The current University System dates from 1972, when the General Assembly completely restructured higher education in North Carolina, bringing all state-supported institutions of higher learning into a single system. Today the University of North Carolina System consists of sixteen campuses: the six listed above plus Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina School of the Arts, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Western Carolina University, and Winston-Salem State University.
