Wireless Access
Information on how to prepare your CCI or personal laptop for wireless networking can be reached by contacting ITS.
Several areas of Davis have been designated as zones where wireless access can be made. Those areas are:
- First floor in the Reference Reading Room
- the second floor mezzanine, and
- on the center North side of the 7th and 8th floors
Network: Networking and Connections
Network Connections
If you wish to browse the web, search the library catalog or library databases, check your email, or print to the printers in the Information Commons on the main floor, you must connect the laptop to one of the network
ports throughout the library.
Connecting the Laptop to the Network
There are two ways to connect the Laptop to the Network: using an ethernet network cable to plug into one of our Network Ports; or using a Wireless Card to access our wireless network.
Choosing NOT to Connect to the Network
If you do not want to be connected to the network, simply boot the machine without plugging the network cable into the network port. You will still
be able to use Microsoft Office 2000 Professional applications, but you will not be able to print documents from these applications using the printers in the Information Commons on the main floor.
Printing
In order to print from any and all applications on the laptop, you must be connected to the Network. All jobs sent to this printer are queued
on a network server and must be printed in the Information Commons on the first floor of Davis Library. Your print job will remain in the queue for 60 minutes, at which time it will be deleted.
When printing to this printer, you will be prompted to:
- Enter a name for your print job
- Enter your name.
When you are ready to pick-up your printed document, go to one of the three UNIPRINT stations in the Information Commons and follow the instructions below.
- Swipe your UNC One Card
- Select your job
- Click on the 'Print' button
Network and Hardware
If you experience problems with your network connection or with laptop hardware, please contact the Circulation Desk on the first floor. (Before bringing network problems to the Circulation Desk, please make sure that
you have properly connected the machine to the network jack and that the network cable is connected to the laptop).
Printing, Library Catalog or Web Browser
Questions or problems with printing, the Library Catalog or web browsing (Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) should be directed to the Reference Desk on the main floor.
All Other Software Applications
Any problems that you encounter with applications such as Microsoft Office 2000 Professional (Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, or Microsoft Word), email /telnet/remote login (Siren or Kermit95), WS-FTP, or Windows 2000 should be brought to the attention of the ITS Computer Lab on the 3rd floor.
Warning
Do not , under any circumstances, leave laptops, personal computers,or any valuables unattended. The library is not responsible for lost or stolen laptops, personal computers, their components, or any other items.Website comments or questions: Dani Volker
